Author: Gupt, Bharat

Issue Date: 1990

Publisher: Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi

Description: The concept of dharmis lokadhanni and natyadharmi is peculiarly Indian and has no parallel in the dramaturgy of Aristotle. Dharmis are ways of manipulating dramatic production with respect to acting and the handling of the story. Aristotle has also said little about production modes in Greek classical theatre. The three words loka, natya and dharmi have to be viewed first as general Sanskrit words and then as· definitive terms as given in the text. In Hindi and other modem Indian languages loka has come to denote folk like Loka-kala, loka-sangeeta etc. it relates folk art and folk music. Lokadhanni is taken to mean the folk mode of theatre and natyadharmi is interpreted to denote classical theatre .
