Description: Present article is about Gangubai Hangal (1913-2009) was an Indian singer of Hindustani classical music. Gangubai Hangal was born in Dharwad to Chikkurao Nadiger, an agriculturis and Ambabai, a vocalist of Carnatic music. Gangubai belongs to the Gangamat caste of Karnataka, fishermen and boatmen by occupation. She performed all over India and for All India Radio stations until 1945. In present article author Vijay Mulay gave personal tribute to Gangubai Hangal and also describe her great-great-grandmother was Gangawwa,after whom Gangubai was named. In her childhood Gangubai learnt kirtanams from her mother and accompanied Ambabai in her programmes. Of the major Hindustani musicians in Gangubai's childhood, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan appreciated Carnatic music best. Ambabai was looking for a good teacher for Gangubai in Hindustani music Hudgur Krishtacharya , a student of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, had begun a class in Hubli and Ambabai, hearing of this, decided to move there.Thus Gangubai's formal schooling ended in the fifth year.Krishtacharya began teaching Gangubai but would accept no fee. Gangubai learnt some 50 songs from Krishtacharya that year.
