DHENKI- Husking Lever

Description: In the beginning of human civilization, a natural surface of a rock was used as the mortar and a piece of stone as pestle. Constant used developed making of the mortar by scooped out in a stone or later a block of wood or a portion of a trunk of a tree, and the pestle used to be of a straight branch of a tree. This hand-operated device of husking is more effectively transferred to the husking lever popularly known as the Dhenki.
The principle of lever action as applied in the making of this implement enhances largely its working capability. The hand pestle and mortar are in extensive use with different forms, and sizes owing to one’s culture and a sense of their aesthetic embodiment throughout the country. The gradual development of the husking lever is widely used among the rural and folk population among the states like West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Manipur as well as in other parts of the country. One such husking lever used by the Rajwar community in the Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh shows high efficacy of husking cereals and paddy. Among the Rajwar household, the Dheki in most of the cases is installed inside their house near the hearth. This significant technological based husking lever is used both by men and women.
