Description: This image of a train station by Ratnagar has a dream-like quality achieved through manipulated printing and exposure techniques that lend it a slight blur and tonal variations characteristic of pictorialism. As the artist put it, "The recruit (to pictorial photography) will shed the popular idea that a photograph should have microscopically sharp definition, and will use it as a medium through which to express to others the emotions and moods aroused in him by Man and Nature".

dc.description.statementofresponsibility | F R Ratnagar (1898-1994) was one of the founding members of the Camera Pictorialists of Bombay, a group that pursued artistic photography at a time when the medium was considered too popular to be art. An international movement at the time, many groups of pictorialists flourished in India as well as abroad. They wanted to explore the possibilities of the camera beyond the mere documentation of an event or subject. |
