A Palatial Building with a Seated Shy Heroine with Her Maid

Keywords: Painting
Pahari Painting

Publisher: National Museum, New Delhi

Description: This painting, belonging to the Pahari school of painting, depicts a palatial building with a red wall, chattaris on the rooftop, a cypress tree, and three creepers against a green background. The shy heroine is seated on a terrace against a pillow, holding the hem of her ordhni in her right hand, while a maid holds both of her hands and persuades her to meet the hero (who is not in the picture). The lady has turned her face away in reluctance and wears a green choli, orange coloured ghagra, a transparent ordhni, ear-rings, nose ring, armlets, and an ornament fixed in the hair on her head. She has black hair with tresses falling at the back, a large face, and her eyes show the intensity of feeling. The maid is somewhat dark-complexioned and wears a mauve coloured choli, a ghagra with dots, patka, and ordhni. She also wears earrings, nose ring, malas of pearls, armlets, bangles, and a head ornament with strings of pearls. She has black hair, with one curl coming up to the ear, and a surahi lies nearby. The painting has a red border on one side only.
