Adham Khan’s Tomb

Keywords: Historical Monument
Mughal Architecture

Description: This Mughal Era tomb from 1566- built by command of Emperor Akbar- occupies a prominent place in Mehrauli today. Built in an octagonal plan, the tomb is locally known as a Bhool Bhulaiyya - or labyrinth, because of a staircase that runs within its walls. It is said that this winding staircase can transport visitors either to the roof of this domed tomb or to a dead end somewhere inside its walls. In the centre of this eight-sided tomb were two cenotaphs- one for Adham Khan, another for his mother, Maham Anga. Adham Khan was foster-brother to the Mughal Emperor Akbar, as his mother Maham Anga had been Akbar’s wet nurse and carer.
