Description: The Hauz-e-Shamsi is a reservoir, or hauz, named and built by the second sultan of the Delhi Sultanate - Shamshuddin Iltutmish in 1230 C.E. situated in Mehrauli, Delhi. Apart from being a source of water, the hauz is also a source of local legend. According to this legend, the area where the hauz is situated was chosen by Iltutmish after he visited it in a dream. Once completed, the Hauz-e-Shamsi served as both a centre of recreation, and as a source of drinking water for the medieval inhabitants of Mehrauli. The area around the hauz was considered sacred thanks to its association with the Prophet.
