Jahaz Mahal

Keywords: Historical Monument
Lodi Architecture

Description: This tall and imposing sandstone and greystone structure was built during the Lodi period (late 15th - early 16th century), but it is unclear why. Historians have suggested it could have been a residence, a mosque, or even an inn or sarai for visitors to the shrine of Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki. The reason for its unusual name lies in the fact that the Jahaz Mahal lies close to the Hauz-e-Shamsi, and its shadow on the reservoir, it is said, resembled a ship. During the Mughal Era, the Jahaz Mahal, like many other structures in Mehrauli, was used as a summer palace by the Royals, a residence they used especially during the annual Phoolwalon ki Sair.
