Description: Prepared by the prominent art historian Vincent Smith, this is a catalogue of coins in the Indian Museum, Calcutta. This work is a compilation of all the three parts of the catalogue, namely, 'The Early Foreign Dynasties and the Guptas, 'Ancient Coins of Indian Types' and 'Persian Medieval, South Indian, and Miscellaneous Coins.' Each of these parts is discussed in great detail. Coinage is usually categorised according to the dynasties which issued them. These categories are then discussed in greater detail. The author explores multiple facets of the coinage: history, features, technique, symbols and legends. In addition, the lists of coins in the museum are detailed in tables according to their weight, metal, size, obverse and reverse.
