Early Buddhist Monachism (600 B.C.-100 B.C.)

Author: Dutt, Sukumar

Keywords: Buddhist Monachism, Vinayapitaka, Patimokkha

Issue Date: 1924

Publisher: London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co.

Description: This work of Sukumar Dutt consists of his broader investigation of the history of Buddhist monks and Hindu Sanyasis of ancient India. Buddhist monasticism has been historically an incredible result of a gradual process, changing under the pressure of its sociological environments and its own internal principle of evolution. The author expresses the view that the Buddhist monastic life in India as pictured in the Chinese travelogues is far different from the monastic life reflected in the Vinayapitaka. The chapters in this book deal with the laws of the Vinayapitika and their interpretation; the primitive paribrajaka; the Sangha and the Patimokkha; the growth of the Buddhist monastery and the internal polity of a Buddhist sangha.
