Description: The author, a part of the Indian civil services, was engaged in the famine-stricken districts of Bengal in 1866. Initially, he could not find sufficient information about the calamity. In 1869, while collecting statistical accounts of Bengal, the author gathered credible evidence, researched thoroughly, and created this document to provide information on the famine aspects of forty districts of Bengal. These district accounts contain information on famine prices in 1866 (in some cases 1869), famine warning, means of transit, cultivated area and outturn of crops, agricultural population, cost of grains, labour population, and a summary of population estimates.
