Qudsia Begum's childhood followed closely on the last invasion into India of the Afghans from the North and the march of the Maharatta armies from the Deccan into Upper India. Her younger days were witness to the advancing power of the East India Company, the defeat of the Maharattas, and the stamping out of the predatory bands of the Pindaras.
