The History of the Bengali Language

Author: Mazumdar, Bijayachandra

Keywords: Bengali Language, Bengali Literature, History, Aryan, Dravidian, Prakrit

Publisher: University of Calcutta, Calcutta

Description: Authored by Bijayachandra Mazumdar, this book presents a comprehensive history of the Bengali Language. It opens with a stout denial of Sir G Grierson’s theory of the origin of the Aryan Vernaculars. The author maintains their deviation from the Vedic language, and explains their variations as due to the influence of non-Aryan speech, mainly Dravidian, particularly, Bengali, Oriya, and Assamese. In his opinion these languages are all primarily evoked from one and the same Eastern Magadhi Prakrit, and the first two, that is, Bengali and Oriya have been influenced in a secondary degree by Dravidian speech.
