The drama was first performed in 1984 and is one of the most acclaimed productions of the academy. The drama was written by MK Binodini Devi and the choreography was by Th. Chaotombi Singh. The story of the drama comes from a popular Manipuri legend of Kedang - a chieftain and his lady love Tonu. During a hunting expedition Kedang traps a sangai deer and brings it back with him to gift it to Tonu. The sangai is a brow-antlered deer and much revered in Manipur. Upon return from the expedition Kedang is met with the news of Tonu's engagement to the King. Kedang then releases the sangai realizing his folly.
