Description: The video is a presentation on the history of illustrated Bengali literature. The film traces the beginnings of the printing technology in Bengal to Serampore at the turn of the 19th century. It also looks at the establishment of the printing press at Bartala in 1821. The first printing press at Serampore was instituted by a group of Baptist missionaries led by William Carey and John Marshman. With the initiative of Ganga Kishore Bhattacharya the first Bengali illustrated book, Oonoodah Mongul, was published in 1816 with six illustrations by Bharat Chandra Ray. This publication created a demand for printed material among the Bengali public and communities of specialized craftsmen like the Karmakars and the Swarnakars joined the printing industry as engravers and illustrators. The period from 1816 to 1845 saw the publication of many notable Bengali illustrated works like Panchanand Karmakar's Deba Juddha, Nigharatattya and Kali Bilas by Vishwamber Karmakar.
